Spring planting advice

1 April 2026

As the growing season gets underway, this is a great time to start preparing your plot and planting early crops.

If you’re just getting started, don’t worry about doing everything at once. Begin with a small area, clear weeds gradually, and focus on getting your soil ready.

Early in the season is ideal for crops such as onions, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, and peas. More sensitive plants can be started indoors or in a greenhouse until the weather becomes more stable.

Make sure to keep an eye on the weather, especially late frosts, which can damage young plants. It’s often better to wait a little longer than to plant too early.

If you have spare seedlings or seeds, consider sharing them with other plot holders — it’s a great way to support each other and build a stronger community. You can leave items on the sharing table for others to use.

Regular visits, even short ones, will make a big difference and help you stay on top of your plot as the season progresses.
