Spring update from the beehives

1 April 2026

The beekeeping season has now begun at Holden Gardens Allotment , and our bees have already started bringing in the first light spring honey.

Even on cooler days, you may notice them flying out of the hive in search of early forage. They are busy exploring the area and making the most of every opportunity to gather nectar.

We are now looking ahead to the next main source of nectar — the hawthorn trees growing along the allotment boundaries. They are just starting to come into bloom, and if the weather is kind, they should provide a rich and healthy source for the bees.

With a bit of sunshine and warmer days, this could lead to a lovely, aromatic, and naturally healthy honey later in the season.

Bees play an important role in supporting biodiversity across the allotment, so it’s great to see them active again.
